Burnham Beeches- Corporation of London Open Spaces Department
Burnham Beeches is managed by the Corporation of London Open Spaces Department. As a designated National Nature Reserve and a candidate for Special Area for Conservation, any changes to the provision of catering at Burnham Beeches had to be treated in a very sensitive manner. FSA were brought in by the Corporation of London because of their previous experience in other environmentally and conservationally sensitive sites such as the Royal Parks and historic venues.
Initially mystery shoppers were sent in to review the current services and provide independent feedback. A series of meeting were held with the local management team to agree the parameters for developing catering on the site to ensure that these were in tune with the Corporation's aims and objectives for the site and with the site management plan.
Market research in the form of face to face interviews with 450 visitors took place during June 2003. A full analysis report was created from the data collected and a summary produced highlighting the key issues. Using all the research conducted, a strategic plan was developed for catering. This has recommended the development of a single catering unit constructed from natural materials and located in a less environmentally sensitive site to the two current kiosks but in a commercially attractive location. An outline business plan has been presented for consideration by the trustees.
